MORE ON LUSH
Encouraged by a fellow Art History student at St Andrews University, Baron Lush first took up the brush in 2002. Since then, he has completed almost four hundred paintings mainly in oils and has been invited to exhibit in Scotland, Oslo, London and New York. Neither bound by convention nor the urge to defy it, Lush simply paints what he likes, how he likes and when he likes regardless of what has or has not been done before. Influenced by several artists, such as Van Gogh, Edvard Munch and Brake Baldwin, Lush freely admits that the styles he adopts for all of his major series are essentially eclectic. What is perhaps more significant is the fact that such influences act as springboard for a lively palette of meaningful self-expression. That said, he never forgets the question always put to his class at St Andrews by one of his tutors: ‘Would you hang it on your wall?’ Consequently, he always strives to create a convincing balance between interest and aesthetic value.

In the following article published by the Agora Gallery in its booklet United in Art: Fine Art from England Ireland Wales and Scotland (June 2007), the author wrote:
‘Baron Charlie Lush paints with a sense of exuberance and passion. His work focuses on the most magical moments in everyday life either in company or in solitude. Lush’s painting displays a certain nostalgia for Impressionism and a definite nod towards German Expressionism but, ultimately, these works transcend categories and are simply and beautifully themselves. Vivid colours, sweeping brushwork, good composition and natural scenes characterize much of Lush’s work; his human figures are stylized and elegantly dramatize much of his output….’

To which Marie R. Pagano added in the New York magazine Gallery & Studio (vol. 9, no. 5):
‘Currently residing in Scotland, Baron Charlie Lush evokes a mood akin to Edvard Munch in “Women on the Path” with its small figures dwarfed by sinuous trees while another painting entitled “Women on the Boat” creates a contrastingly festive feeling with fashionably dressed figures on the deck of an elegant cruise ship. Like Alex Katz, Lush is one of the few contemporary painters who can make serious art from stylish subjects’.
